Well...we are finally home from our first visit to our future 28 month homesite, St. Kitts. We had an awesome time and were fortunate to have my parents fly down with us to take in the beautiful scenery and learn tidbits of what to expect before the big move. To get to St. Kitts from Houston, you must fly to Miami for a layover using American Airlines. There is only one American Airline flight-a-day that flies to the island. There are other airlines that will get you there, but you may have to island hop before arriving on Kitts. On the day we arrived, we spent the afternoon hanging out at the Marriott Resort beach; the Atlantic side of the island. The beach was beautiful, with soft brown sand, clear water and no shells! We gambled that night, (well every night) in the Marriott casino. We were highly impressed with the facilities. Of course it is not as big as the casinos in the states, but they do offer your normal craps tables, black jack, 3 card poker, roulette, hold-em, etc. /and video poker, Mr. Cashman, etc. And the good thing is you gamble with US money, so you don't have to worry about exchange with the East Caribbean dollar.
The second day, an employee from Ross picked us up from the airport and took us to the University in which we had a full day tour. We even were scheduled to sit through a class of Micro-anatomy! (Sidenote: so glad it is Eric and not me!) Microanatomy of fifty million different species is MIND BOGGLING TO ME! Ross has strict/enforced security 24/7, and we were not allowed to take pics of the school while on the tour. I will post pics of the university once we move in and get settled. They showed us the dorm apartments in which will be living until December. When you step outside, you have a view of the Caribbean sea to the left and lush, green tropical hills that reach the clouds to the right. BREATHTAKING! Everyone affiliated with the school was so personable, welcoming and went above and beyond to answer our Q's and make us feel right at home.
The next day we took a tour of the Southern peninsula of the island. The trip up the hills was beautiful but frightening considering we were on the left side of the road, our driver on the right side of the car, and cliffs that dropped off 20 ft. from the roads. I think the highlight of the trip for Eric was seeing COWS grazing the island! That is when he decided he could definately leave Texas! hehe What is crazy though, there are no fences...so the cows roam the island freely, but the islanders know who the cows belong to?!?! And then there are the monkeys...Eric is dead set on bringing his binoculars back in order to scout out the monkeys, "mountain goats", (and suspected deer, but never seen before from our taxi driver. )
We spent the day at a popular but semi-seclusive beach called Reggae/Cockleshell beach. Here we enjoyed the beautiful blue waters, snorkled, seeing TONS of star-fish, beautiful tropical fish and coral. In the slide show below, the enormous pig is "Wilbur" who lives at Reggae beach. The average temp for the 4 days there was around 86* and cool tropical winds at night. Eric and I are looking forward to "Liven de Life" in 6 weeks and "rushing slowly". :) We had a great trip and look forward to friends and family visiting us in the future! I know I left a lot out, but there will be more tales to blog about in the future...Enjoy!
