St. Kitts sea turtle nesting period is about to end and the hatching season has already begun. In 2003, a sea turtle monitoring network was established in St. Kitts to monitor sea turtle activity in hopes of strengthening sea turtle protection laws. Many Ross students volunteer with this organization to walk the beaches at night to assist in research and assistance to the turtles when laying their eggs. They measure the turtles, tag them, relocate their eggs/nest if it is too close to the water, etc. The three types of sea turtles surrounding St. Kitts' waters are the green, hawksbill, and leatherbacks. Below is a picture of a sea turtle nest that is located right by our apartment. When Eric and I walk to the beach with Max, we are always hoping to see tiny sea turtles scurrying towards the water. There are about 4 or 5 nests that line the beach near our place.
